An elderly woman living in China has become known as the ‘unicorn woman’, as she has a large growth sprouting from the top of her head that appears similar to a horn. Her real name is Liang Xiuzhen, 87, and she will soon be able to live without the horn following a surgery to have it removed.

The abnormal growth prevents her from sleeping, and it started off as a simple ‘black mole.’ The ‘horn’ developed into something a little larger, though, eventually taking up the majority of her forehead. Her son, Wang Chaojun, said: “My mother complained about this mole-like growth on her head that itched all the time. We found ways to cure her itch using traditional Chinese medicine, and then left it be.”

Two years after that, the mole began to sprout into a small horn – about the size of a little finger. The old woman accidentally broke the small horn, though, and it grew back 13 centimeters long within a matter of six months. Doctors have diagnosed it as ‘cornu cutaneum’, or a keratinous skin tumor that may grow into the shape of a horn.
